Retrofitting and rehabilitation of vernacular housing in flood prone areas in Sri Lanka

This paper presents findings from an investigation into applications to improve the structural resilience and safety of low-rise vernacular masonry homes when subject extreme flooding. In 2016 2017 flooding brought devastation throughout many areas in Sri Lanka. Findings field investigations evaluate, characterize, quantify extent nature damage low rise houses these flood events are presented. Low cost solutions were developed enhance flexural capacity walls using reinforced plasters. Single storey rural particularly at risk rapid events, limited evacuation opportunities require a means in-situ refuge. Focusing on risks, unique retrofitting project, including elevated refuge area for occupants escape shelter during is also research will directly welfare vulnerable communities living areas, minimizing induced failure, while enabling people safely remain their homes.
